I recently started working with the Procreate art program on the iPad. I always wanted to draw the blues mystery story I have been working on in a digital format, and now I can do so much more easily. Several artist friends have been raving about this setup for digital art, and I can see why now. It’s very intuitive and streamlined. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m already getting pretty comfortable with it.
As you can see, I’m drawing this comic in a pretty different style from my other work. I’m working with a limited color palette and only using “rough” digital brushes for the inking/coloring. I will still probably make adjustments and tweaks as I work through this 18 page story, but I think I’m finding an approach that works.
So here is the first panel from that story that is still a work in progress… Enjoy!

Want to be first to grab a print copy of the entire Evil Ain’t Easy story? If you live anywhere near Springfield, MO, swing by LibraryCon this Saturday and grab a copy! We’ll have all our other comics, prints, and novels, too! We hope to see you there!

I am currently putting the finishing touches on a full issue of Evil Ain’t Easy comics. This comic was originally featured in the DC Comics online Zuda competition, and then we included it in Random Ink #4. I always had a few more ideas that I wanted to explore with these characters and so decided to create a full comic of the frustrated evil scientist Dr. Nimbus and his very chill henchman Lothar. You will be able to get a copy in print (and online) soon, but I will also be releasing the whole thing scene-by-scene on social media. So follow along on Instagram, Twitter, and/or Facebook to see a dose of Dr. Nimbus in your feed a few times a week! Here’s some process shots!

Here are some test images for a new Random Ink story I’m working on. It’s called “Death Letter Blues”, and it will be a murder mystery wrapped up in the Delta blues of the 1920’s. I’m still deciding on the color palette and rendering style I want to go with. What do you think?

I recently finished coloring all of the past Random Ink stories. The two stories previewed above feature some of the main characters that Elton and I have been developing stories for. The “Intervention” story (originally printed in our first issue) is an illustrated prose story that serves as a prelude for the main story that starts later in “First Impressions” (from the third issue, with art by Matt Meyers).
We are in the thick of working on Random Ink #5, which will also be collected with all the other issues in a our first Random Ink graphic novel. One of the main stories in that issue will pick up right where these stories left off… we’re looking forward to showing you more about these characters!
Wednesday April 25, 2018, at 6:23 am We are excited to return to the S.P.A.C.E. (Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo) convention in Columbus, Ohio, this year! Twelve years ago, it was the first ever con that we tabled at. It had a great energy to it… nothing but creators displaying their original (and sometimes hand-printed) comics. We only had one comic printed at the time, but we still had fun. This time, we’ll be bringing several comics, graphic novels, sketchbooks, novels, and prints. If you’re anywhere in the area, we hope you can make it out! (Admission is free!) I’ll even be giving a presentation about teaching comics on Saturday.
Above is a brand new Evil Ain’t Easy comic I made for the convention program. Our friend, Levi Hoffmeier, makes an appearance alongside his excellent Mayflower comic. If you like high-quality sci-fi stories with beautifully rendered art, then you should really check it out! Plus, he’s just a heck of a nice guy.

Saturday July 29, 2017, at 2:48 pm Here’s the newly-colored version of this simple little tale that originally appeared in our first issue of Random Ink. Remember you can read all of the stories from this anthology here!

Wednesday July 19, 2017, at 3:00 pm We have been making plans for the next year and wanted to keep you all updated. Our next project is finishing another issue of Random Ink, our comics anthology. This will be the fifth issue in the series and will feature at least three new stories, ranging from the next chapter of our superhero story… to a mystery involving the blues… to another tale of the Last Martian (so, the typical crazy amount of variety that the series is known for).
We are planning on premiering the new issue at Planet Comicon in February of next year. At that time, we will also be combining all five issues into our first full-color collection of comics. We will even be going back and recoloring the stories that were in the black and white issues. Don’t worry if you aren’t able to attend the cons we will be at, as we are exploring options for getting the book to you online for purchase or download, too.
So here is the the very first Last Martian, presented in color for the first time. We’ll be posting more stories in c0lor as they are finished… enjoy!

We are really looking forward to year two of this new Kansas City Comicon this Friday through Sunday! We had a great time last year, and people really seemed to enjoy it. If you are in the area, come by and check it out… you can find our table with the map above.
We are especially excited to finally debut the new Rook City Vol. 1 at this show! This book collects all three issues of the series, along with 25 pages of bonus content (including a new prologue and epilogue not featured on the webcomic). We’re pretty proud of how it turned out.

Elton will also be premiering the third book in his Middlemen series, The Brother’s War, at this show. He will also have copies of his other four books available, too. As usual, we will have prints for sale and will be drawing commissions all weekend. We hope to see you there!
